Celebrating National Blueberry Month: Fun Facts and Recipes

July is National Blueberry Month, a time dedicated to celebrating one of nature’s sweetest and most nutritious treasures. At The Fruit Company, we’re delighted to honor this delicious fruit by sharing fascinating facts and mouth-watering recipes featuring blueberries.

5 Fascinating Facts about Blueberries

  • Origins: Blueberries are native to North America, and indigenous peoples have harvested them for centuries. Commercial cultivation began in the early 20th century, thanks to botanist Frederick Coville and farmer Elizabeth White.
  • Growing Conditions: Blueberries thrive in well-drained, acidic soils with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5. They require full sun and consistent watering for optimal fruit production. Cooler climates like the Pacific Northwest provide perfect conditions for these delicious berries.
  • Types: Varieties include highbush, lowbush, and rabbiteye. Like those in our HarvestClub™ Americana box, highbush blueberries are the most cultivated.
  • Nutritional Powerhouses: Low in calories yet high in nutrients, blueberries are packed with antioxidants, vitamins C and K, and fiber, supporting heart health, brain function, and digestion.
  • Fun Facts: Blueberries can improve memory, contain natural anti-inflammatory compounds, and are one of the few naturally blue foods.
